Cultures

Cultures

Phytoplankton to pour straight into the tank, the fertilizer that grows more of it, and copepods on the way. Shipped fresh from Texas.

Every bottle here does two jobs: a feed for the reef this week, and a starter for the reactor that keeps it going. Start with Nannochloropsis and F/2, and the Launchpad walks the rest through.

Shipped fresh from Texas, across the US. In Australia? The full range is on our AU store.

On the shelf now

Two bottles today. The range is growing.

Phytoplankton, 500 mL

Nannochloropsis

The workhorse phyto. Pour it into the tank as a feed, or into a Culturi as the starter for the batch after that.

  • Feeds pods, rotifers, clams and corals
  • Seeds a full Culturi batch
  • 10 mL per 100 L a day, kept in the fridge
$15.00 USD Details

Fertilizer, 100 mL

Guillard's F/2

What a phyto culture runs on. Dose it into the saltwater before the starter goes in, and the culture darkens on schedule.

  • 1 mL per liter of culture water
  • One 100 mL bottle feeds 100 liters
  • The only consumable a reactor needs

Next on the bench

The range is growing. This is what is coming.

Coming next

Copepods

Tisbe, Tigriopus and Apocyclops are what we culture in Australia, and they are the plan for Texas. The pods a mandarin picks at and corals feed on.

  • Benthic and planktonic species
  • A feed for the tank, or a culture in the Culturi-M with the Pod Core
  • The reactor pages already carry the copepod mode

Why culture

Why keep phyto going at home

A bottle a fortnight adds up. A reactor on the bench turns one bottle into a standing supply.

  • One bottle, many batches

Pour a starter into a reactor, feed it F/2, and harvest a fresh bottle every 5 to 7 days.

  • Fresh beats shipped

Phyto is at its best the day it is harvested. Grown beside the tank, it never sits in a box.

  • Feeds the whole web

Copepods, rotifers, clams, sponges and corals all eat it, so a steady dose keeps the microfauna up.

  • Nutrient control

Phyto takes up nitrate and phosphate as it grows, and so does the life it feeds.

  • No consumables

The Culturi reactors run on glass and a lid, not bags. The only thing you buy again is fertilizer.

  • Ships from Texas

Bottles leave Texas, so they are not crossing an ocean to reach a US reef.

Questions

Before you order

How do I store the bottle?

In the fridge, cap on, out of the light. Shake before you dose.

How much do I dose?

10 mL per 100 L (26 US gal) of tank water daily. More if you are feeding a pod culture or a tank full of filter feeders.

How do I turn one bottle into a culture?

Fill a Culturi, or any clean sealed vessel, with new saltwater. Add F/2 at 1 mL per liter, pour the bottle in, and give it light and air. It darkens over 5 to 7 days. Harvest most of it, and what is left seeds the next batch. The Launchpad has the step by step.

Where does it ship from?

Texas. Get it into the fridge when it lands and it is ready to dose.

What is coming next?

Copepods. The Culturi-M with the Pod Core is built to culture them, and the reactor pages already carry the copepod mode.
